Definitely one for motoring enthusiast is this 1980 GCS Hawke - Morgan replica!
Registered on 1st August 1980, on the new 'W' plate, and styled to look like a classic Morgan Plus 8, the car is finished in British Racing Green. We believe that it is based on Ford Cortina running gear, but now features a space frame chassis and a tuned 3.5 litre Rover V8 engine up front. In a car that weighs less than 800kg....
Suffice it to say, it goes rather well!
This car has been very well built using quality parts. The engine is an early Rover P5 unit, was put together by JE engineering and has been blueprinted. We're waiting for paperwork to confirm the engine build and cam spec. It also has tubular headers with a twin-pipe stainless exhaust system. Four barrel carb. Reputed to be close to 200bhp. Usual LT77 gearbox in unusually fine order - absolutely no problems selecting any of the gears at all. Runs and drives very well indeed.
Current owner has had the car well over twenty years, but has decided that it's time to let it go because of not having used it for a number of years. It has been occasionally started and driven around a private yard to keep it ticking over, though.
When we got the car the SU fuel pump was playing up, and so has been replaced with a solid-state unit and the car has been set-up on a local rolling road. Consequently it now runs very well indeed it sounds gorgeous!
The tyres that were on the car when we got it were the thick end of twenty years old, and so they've been replaced with a new set of Yokohama BluEarth GT's. The brakes feature Wilwood callipers on the front and work fine, and pull the car up straight, although there's not a huge amount of feel through the pedal.
There is still a bit of minor fettling for us to do, and no doubt a few things that the next keeper will want to do too.
Note that the colour discrepancy that shows in the images isn't as bad now that we've polished the car, and was a result of the difference between alloy and steel panels.
However, in summary it's an exciting project for someone.
The car is correctly registered with the DVLA, and because it has kept the original identity it is tax and MOT exempt.
There is now walk-round video of the underside of the car available on our YouTube channel here: https://youtu.be/70uso1iERa0
Viewing strongly recommended, and we are open to serious offers on the car.
